Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

A Pathway to Healing from Trauma and Distressing Life Experiences
Some experiences leave an imprint on the mind and body that talking alone cannot always resolve. You may know the event is in the past, but the emotions, images, and physical responses still feel present and overwhelming.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful, evidence-based therapy that helps people heal from the effects of trauma, anxiety, and distressing life experiences—so they can move forward with greater freedom and peace.

At Steadfast Counseling , we offer EMDR as part of our compassionate, trauma-informed care to support your journey of healing.

What Is EMDR?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured therapy developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro that helps people process and release the emotional and physical distress linked to traumatic or disturbing memories.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR focuses on:

  • Reprocessing distressing memories so they no longer trigger overwhelming emotions or symptoms
  • Desensitizing the emotional charge connected to traumatic experiences
  • Integrating new, healthier beliefs about oneself and the world

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation—typically guided eye movements , sounds, or taps—while the client recalls targeted memories. This process supports the brain’s natural ability to process and heal from trauma, helping clients move from survival mode to renewed well-being.

EMDR is supported by extensive research and is recommended by organizations such as the American Psychological Association (APA) and World Health Organization (WHO) as an effective treatment for trauma.

What Can EMDR Help With?
EMDR can be effective for healing a wide range of issues, including:

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Childhood trauma and abuse
  • Betrayal trauma (including trauma from sexually compulsive behaviors)
  • Anxiety and panic disorders
  • Depression linked to unresolved trauma
  • Grief and loss
  • Phobias
  • Performance anxiety
  • Low self-esteem and negative self-beliefs
  • Disturbing memories or flashbacks
  • Attachment wounds and relational trauma

Many clients find that EMDR helps them heal even when they’ve felt stuck in therapy or unable to move past certain memories.

The Benefits of EMDR
1. Healing Trauma at Its Roots
EMDR helps the brain fully process traumatic memories so they no longer cause present-day symptoms like flashbacks, hypervigilance, or emotional reactivity.

2. Rapid and Lasting Change
Many clients experience significant improvement in fewer sessions compared to traditional talk therapy alone.

3. Empowering and Strength-Based
You remain in control throughout the process. EMDR respects your pace and capacity, building resilience as you heal.

4. Supports a Wide Range of Healing Goals
Beyond resolving trauma symptoms, EMDR helps clients:

  • Build a stronger sense of self-worth
  • Release shame and negative self-beliefs
  • Improve emotional regulation
  • Enhance relational capacity and intimacy

5. Integrates Well With Other Therapies
EMDR can be used as a stand-alone treatment or integrated with other approaches (such as Internal Family Systems, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or relational counseling).
